Santosh Adhikari got one the craziest idea that he thought he should implement in the real field. The idea on Banana Farming clicked his mind when J.T.A got a positive result on the soil test for banana farming on his village. J.T.A informed everyone that the soil of the village was good for Banana Farming. He then made up his mind to send his mother to the banana farming training as he would not get enough time to attain the training due to his BBS final year studies. After the training, he thought to farm the bananas on his land where he used to cultivate Rice. All the villagers were against him as they thought he was a fool to use a fertile land for Banana farming. That was a story of 2005, now it’s a different story for the villagers. Everyone on the village is now impressed with the work of Santosh Adhikari as many villagers were able to bank themselves by implementing his idea. To know him better and expose him to the world so that more people would dare to try out their craziest ideas we took a short interview of him.
Didn’t someone from your family object this crazy idea of using your land into banana farming? My mom did support me as she was confident that this idea would work but my brothers were against it. Later they too supported me.
How much land did you use for the banana farming? We used around 6 ropani land of ours and also the land of a government school for the farming. Farming on the land of the school is done through the community.
How much investment did you make for this project? I can’t exactly say how much investment I made for this project because you will have to make the investment regularly on different things but initially it was Rs 20000. I was able to get that return within two years. The school is also able to make good money out of this and hire few private teachers through the money that comes from the banana business.
So are you having any trouble in finding the market for your Banana? Till now I feel that the supply side is less than the demand side, so we aren’t having any trouble in finding the market for banana.
Apart from financial benefit, is there any other benefit that you get from the farming? Of course, there are many benefits of the banana farming. You get direct benefit that is cash which comes from the sales of the banana itself and the roots of the tree. The other benefit is the leaves of the banana. It could be used for various purposes plus we could also feed it to our animals. From the barks and shed leaves we could get a make manure.
Is there any other field that you are engaged right now? Yes, right now I am engaged with by studies (MBS 1st year) and also with Human right for the rural development. We too have published a book “Yuwa Abhihan” through the help of INSECT.
Any words to our surfers? Youth have many responsibilities in the society so never step back from your responsibilities.

I think your work will encourage other youth to do anything in Nepal rather than working in foreign country. If all Nepali work for this type of enterprising activities in their own countries, New Nepal is not far from us. Kura matra garne......tara Kaam Nagarne.... bhayo bhane Pheri Nepal Usta ko ustai hunecha.....
