This week we interviewed a youth "Jiban Baral" who have devoted himself to make people aware about the role of the youth in the society. He is the founding president of Yuwa forum "the first youth led youth run organization of Pokhara" and is right now on the advisory board of the same forum. He has also established an organization called Alternatives with a motive to develop the attribute of entrepreneurship among the youths.  He is also a member of Ashoka Forum for Young Social Entrepreneurs and is a winner of AFYC award as seed fund. He won Youth Initiative Award 2005 and has been rewarded by many local organizations for his contribution to the social works. Here is an interview with this personality.

Me:  In your view, what do you think is the problems associated with youths of today?
Jiban: The main problem is the lack of clear definition of youth. There is no certain age bar for youths in Nepal. In Alternative we have kept the age bar of 16-29 yrs for the youth. The other main problems of today's youth are unemployment, underemployment and lack of resources in the villages.

Me: So, what do you think is the solution to problems you have illustrated above?
Jiban: The problem can be solved through the development of entrepreneurship in Nepal. A student passes outs the formal education and faces the bitterness of unemployment. Education related to entrepreneurship development should be given to all youths which will help a person to open up a business and employee few persons under him, which will help to solve the problem of unemployment. The government should also look after the infrastructure and should develop special policies for the youths. Youth covers 1/3 population of Nepal and still there isn't any specified policies for the youth. The government should put an age bar in the definition of youth and encourage youth participation in the development and formation of national policies.

Me: So tell me more about your organization and the works it does.
Jiban: Well, ALTERNATIVES is a youth run and youth led organization which was established in 2005. The main goals are promotion of economic education and civilized entrepreneurship and development of youth initiative. The main mission of the organization is finding new possibilities for youth.

We conduct different types of program in different colleges and villages like we conducted Youth Entrepreneurship Awareness Campaigning (YEAC) in Kalika V.D.C, Lekhnath, Pumdi Bhumdi and Pokhara. Likewise we conducted another program called Youth Entrepreneurship Training Programs (YETP) in Janapriya ( JMC ) and Pokhara College of Management ( PCM ).  We too had organized the first cave guide training in Batulechaur

Me: The cave guide training seems to be interesting, can you please tell us more about it.
Jiban: We have so many caves in Pokhara. In Batulechaur along we have four caves ( Mahendra Cave, Bat Cave, Crystal Cave and Crazy Cave), but no one had thought about a cave guide. If we could market the brand of these caves then it will help to boost the economic prosperity in this region.  To make the brand stronger, we need to give service to the people who visit the cave. Thus we need cave guides. We trained 16 people out of which 5 are working as a cave guide today and few others are working on the same profession as a part time. It probably was Nepal’s first cave guide training and we were able to get a big success from this training.

Me: What is the prime factor we need to become an entrepreneur?
Jiban: In our words we say we need 3R, i.e. Rights, Responsible and Recognition of ideas.

Me: In Nepal where do you think is the biggest need on entrepreneurship training?
Jiban:
It’s needed in every part of Nepal but the greater need is in the villages than in the city areas. In cities the youth are exposed with many facilities, they have reach in information technology, facilities of government services and many more which will help them to develop themselves. In Villages there is a scarce of many resources. In village, we have great number of youth force but due to lack of practical education they are not able to tab their ideas. Entrepreneurship training helps them to tab their ideas. The training teaches them how to mobilize the local resources and tab the opportunities that’s been floating in the environment.

Me: So, how do you fund your projects, do you get any kind of help from outside?
Jiban: No, we don’t get any funding from outside. We fund our projects from the local sponsors. We conducted the first program of Alternatives with the seed fund I won from Ashoka Foundation, Nepal. That’s why we always try to minimize our cost of operation and voluntarily get volunteers to accomplish the programs. Mostly, we conduct our programs in partnership with other youth organizations..

Me: There are so many NGO working for youths; do you think they are doing the task properly?
Jiban: We can’t exactly predict things on this. Some NGOs are doing great works, while most of them are pretending to be doing works. The main things that lacks in most of the NGOs are the lack of transparency in its work and mobilization of its resources.

Me: Are there any words that you want to convey to our surfers?
Jiban: We are conducting different programs on the International Youth Day – 2007 which is on 12 August, so I request all the youths to make this day a success by marking their presence on the activities we are conducting that day. Your presence will help to accomplish the main theme of our International Youth Day i.e. Be seen, be heard: youth participation in development. Youth entrepreneurship is not only a vocation but it is a life style so every youth has tremendous ideas we youth should believe in our own ideas.
